Sparwood receives grant for stage and washroom project
The District of Sparwood is excited to announce it has been awarded $650,000 in funding through Columbia Basin Trust’s Gathering Area and Town Hub Enhancement and Revitalization (GATHER) Grant Program to support the construction of a new accessible outdoor stage and public washroom facility at Centennial Plaza.
The funding represents the maximum grant amount available through the program.
The Centennial Plaza Stage and Washroom Project will enhance Sparwood’s primary outdoor gathering space through the addition of a raised, covered, accessible performance stage and a permanent, year-round accessible public washroom facility. The project also includes accessible pathways, a ramp, storage and sound equipment spaces all designed to improve functionality, accessibility, and inclusivity.
The project builds upon extensive community engagement that informed the original Centennial Plaza revitalization. Although the project was previously tendered in 2024, rising construction costs placed it beyond the available budget and council subsequently deferred construction while pursuing external funding opportunities. The successful GATHER Grant application now provides a pathway to move the project forward.
“On behalf of council, I am thrilled to share this exciting news with our community,” said Acting Mayor Amy Cardozo. “This funding allows us to move forward with a project that residents clearly supported. The addition of a permanent stage and accessible washroom facilities will strengthen Centennial Plaza as a vibrant hub for community events, celebrations, cultural activities, and everyday connection. We are grateful to Columbia Basin Trust for recognizing the value of this investment and allowing us to bring this vision to life.”
The district will now proceed with final project planning, scope refinement, procurement, and construction readiness activities. Additional project updates and information will be shared with the public as the project progresses.
Through the Gathering Area and Town Hub Enhancement and Revitalization Grant Program, Columbia Basin Trust helps communities throughout the Basin enhance and revitalize gathering spaces that strengthen community connections and improve quality of life.
The District of Sparwood sincerely thanks Columbia Basin Trust for its generous support and commitment to investing in community spaces that foster belonging, connection, and community pride.
