Tree well claims sledder above Morrissey

Fernie Search and Rescue (SAR) was activated twice yesterday (Jan. 31), including one involving a deceased snowmobiler.

The first call was around 3 p.m. for an InReach activation in the Flathead. Two Fernie SAR Technicians responded via Ascent Helicopters. The SOS was found to be a false activation.

“While returning to base, a second activation was reported via the RCMP so the team re-routed to the new location above Morrissey. A 47-year-old sledder was reported to be trapped in a tree well, reported via cell by his son,” Fernie SAR reported on social media.

With light running out the Fernie SAR Technicians were dropped at Fernie Wilderness Adventures and they proceeded to the scene with the assistance of FWA via snowmobile and cat, and worked with FWA Guides to locate and recover the sledder.

Sadly, the sledder was recovered deceased.

“The thoughts of all the rescuers are with the man’s family and friends,” Fernie SAR said.
