With aid of passersby police arrested wanted man after chase
On March 30 at 6:20 p.m., Elk Valley RCMP members were on patrol near the 100 block of Aspen Drive in Sparwood when an officer observed a vehicle known to possibly transport a local man wanted on several outstanding warrants from the Elk Valley area.
After the vehicle was stopped near the Esso gas station, the officer recognized the person in the passenger seat as the wanted man and proceeded to arrest him for the outstanding warrants and for being within 50 km of Sparwood. After placing hands on the man, the man decided to pull away and flee.
A foot pursuit ensued toward Highway 43, where contact again was made with the man, who continued to run from police.
A couple of citizens stopped to observe the activity at the intersection of Highway 43 and Aspen Drive, one of whom attempted to use his door to slow down the suspect, who then proceeded to bounce off the door and continue to run down the steep slope just off the highway, eventually losing his footing and both shoes in the process of cartwheeling toward the trailer park in the lower section of Aspen Drive, reported Elk Valley RCMP Detachment S/Sgt. Svend Nielsen.
āThe officer, after observing the man roll down the hill, commandeered the other vehicle for transport. This unidentified driver drove the officer to the bottom of the road leading into the trailer park. The other officers on duty set up a containment zone and notified the Police Dog Service team, who eventually arrived on site around 8 p.m.,ā S/Sgt. Nielsen said.
āOnce the dog track began, the subject was eventually located hiding underneath a flat deck trailer. When directed to come out by police, the man refused to present himself or show his hands and, with the assistance of the police dog, was taken safely into custody.ā
The man was formally arrested and then transported to hospital where he received treatment caused by his actions during the arrest. After treatment, he was taken to RCMP cells for further processing and to await his bail hearing.
The suspect, 36-year-old Brady Shane Foy, was remanded by consent the next day to appear by video on April 7 in BC Provincial Court on new charges related to breach of his conditions, resisting arrest and the outstanding warrants.
Elk Valley RCMP would like to identify and thank the two people who willingly involved themselves during the arrest and flight of Foy from police.
