Keep your eyes on the road

Keeping your eyes on the road and hands upon the wheel is good advice at all-times while driving, especially in the mountains.

In springtime, it is absolutely vital you do not drive distracted as many more potential obstacles can appear on the road.

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting is asking the driving public to be mindful of springtime challenges while driving on East Kootenay highways.

“The spring melt and runoff is in progress. Motorists should watch for water ponding, mudslides and falling rock throughout the service areas. Please be aware that wildlife activity is also picking up,” Mainroad stated in a public communication this morning.

“We encourage the public to report changing road conditions or emergency situations that could cause a hazard to the driving public such as debris, dead animals, fallen trees, defective signs, bridge damage, potholes, flooding, washouts and mudslides,” the highways contractor asks.

DriveBC is reporting winter driving conditions around much of the region, though looks at the highway cameras lead one to believe that only applied to the Elk Valley and Kootenay National Park earlier this morning. That said, remain vigilant as highway conditions can change in the blink of an eye.

Kimberley area drivers take note: Brushing work is ongoing on Highway 95A from Wycliffe to Kimberley (14.7 km), from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. today,  Friday, Mar. 31. The road is reduced to single lane alternating traffic.

King Street outside Cranbrook is single-lane alternating traffic this morning due to localized flooding.

If you are heading west on Highway 3, keep in mind the ongoing debris removal work 12 km west of Creston after last week’s rock slide. The road is reduced to single lane alternating traffic. Expect 30 minutes delays between 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Please report road hazards and unsafe conditions.

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting 24 hour hotline: 1-800-665-4929. This hotline is used to update DriveBC, dispatch additional personnel and record public communication as required.
