Centre 64 lift completion opening this Friday

By Mike Redfern

The construction of a lift shaft and the installation of an accessibility lift to the second floor theatre at Kimberley’s Centre 64 will be celebrated Friday afternoon, January 11, with a gala opening event from 4 to 6 p.m.

The “Give Us A Lift” project started over a year ago with grant applications to federal and provincial governments and local fund-raising efforts in Kimberley which, together, raised $205,000.

The project broke ground in March 2018 with construction of the lift shaft foundations by City of Kimberley and erection of the shaft by New Dawn Construction, under the supervision of Cover Architectural Collaborative. The lift was then installed by Roberts Elevators & Lifts and received final inspection and approval in December.

Project leader Carol Fergus is delighted to see the project complete and thanks all those individuals and organizations that helped it to fruition.

Friday afternoon’s gala opening will start with a ribbon-cutting at the Studio 64 ground level entrance to the lift followed by speeches of welcome and recognition of all those who contributed to the success of the project before guests are invited up to the theatre to enjoy a slide show and a series of short performances of poetry, improv theatre, and music. Following the performances in the theatre guests will be invited to adjourn to Studio 64 for appetizers and celebratory bubbly.

The project committee regrets that, as theatre seating is limited, attendance at the gala opening will be limited to invited guests only. However, everyone is invited to an Open House at Centre 64 the following afternoon, January 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. when the new accessibility lift can be inspected.
