City of Kimberley council Dec. 9 approved the sale of SunMine to Teck Resources Limited.

At this time, all material related to discussions, the agreement and reports remain confidential.

However, city chief administrative officer Scott Sommerville did provide this statement: “The City of Kimberley is issuing notice under Section 26 of the Community Charter of its intent to sell SunMine solar installation for $1,924,663.54 to Teck Resources Limited. The sale amount is equal to the outstanding debt obligation that the city owes to the Municipal Finance Authority of BC. The city is looking forward to concluding the purchase agreement by the end of December. We wish Teck great success in the continuing operation of SunMine.”

Coun. Darryl Oakley said of the sale, “It’s a very good thing.” He added, the sale would allow the mine to “grow” as Teck has the “wherewithal” to take it into the future.

Chris Stannell, Teck Public Relations Manager stated, “Discussions relating to the potential sale of SunMine to Teck are ongoing between the City of Kimberley and Teck.  Teck has been a partner in SunMine since the outset, providing use of the land and site infrastructure as well as an original financial contribution towards SunMine. A potential purchase by Teck allows the city to pursue other economic development priorities while allowing Teck to learn even more about solar power and its potential applicability at other Teck sites.”
