Clearing up a few misconceptions

Letter to the Editor

This letter is in response to Jeff Bromley’s August 13 letter to the editorCity should practice what it preaches.’

In response to Mr. Bromley’s letter, I would like to clear up a few misconceptions.

First, the average salary of the unionized membership is not $48,000 – it’s $59,691 for full-time unionized employees, not including benefits of 35% on top.

The average management salary is $86,834, not $96,000 as stated by Mr. Bromley.

The salary figures are also incorrect. The figures Mr. Bromley provided are earnings, not salary.

The annual SOFI (Statement of Financial Information) report can be found here showing any employee who earns more than $75,000.

The CO earned $113,434, not $133,434 (Ed. note: Mr. Bromley acknowledged a typo error in his letter and that figure has been changed). Both the CFO and CAO earnings included an asterix stating that these earnings included a payout of accrued vacation, which Mr. Bromley failed to mention. I was unable to take vacation, as I was also handling the absence of a Corporate Officer for eight months, at no extra cost to the city.

My actual salary is $126,075 and has been since January 1, 2015.

Management salaries have been determined through comparison to like-sized municipalities.

The management staff has historically received the same increases and benefits as the unionized staff.

Scott Sommerville,

Chief Administrative Officer,

City of Kimberley
