Kimberley is still a company town
Letter to the Editor
Re: The letter ‘Remember the REC Silicon promise?’
To your point about establishing a manufacturing plant in Kimberley – I am not so sure the new wave of settlers in Kimberley are looking for this.
Since the mine closure our community has evolved from industrial into a lifestyle and retirement community and the current increase in the population seems to support this new direction.
More business is welcome but let that be business with a small ‘b.’
There are location challenges due to shortage of land zoned for businesses as we know.
One vision is that Kimberley can do well as the preferred city for folks to live, due to lifestyle and recreational considerations, within a prospering regional community.
Case-in-point:” anecdotally our city is home to 20-30% of the Tembec (now Canfor) workforce.
So even years after the mine closure Kimberley is still a company town.
