Remember the REC Silicon promise?

Letter to the Editor

I’m not sure how many Kimberley voters remember back in 1996 when NDP Jim Doyle was running for a second term. Part of Jim’s platform was a new silicon plant would be built in Kimberley. Leading up to the election Jim was 95% sure Rec Silicon would build the plant in Kimberley. Two weeks prior to the election Jim decided to double down and stated he was 99% sure the plant would be built in Kimberley.

Hearing and hoping this was the real thing, I for the first time in my life voted NDP and it was the last time. Two days after the election Jim announced the deal had gone sour and the plant would not be built in Kimberley.

The plant intended to be built in Kimberley ended up being built in Butte, Montana and was commissioned for production in 1998 and employs 300 people. To read more about REC Silicon operations, go to silicon production.

I doubt if there is a solar farm in the State of Montana but they sure have a lot of good jobs in Butte and Moses Lake manufacturing parts and components for the solar industry thanks to Jim Doyle and the NDP Government.

I guess it doesn’t take much for politicians to burn me once but not so easily the second time around. I don’t know how any responsible voters in Kimberley could vote NDP after this debacle. I will be voting for Doug Clovechok and the BC Liberal Party in this election and I would urge all like-minded people to vote for Doug Clovechok so we stand a chance to attract companies like Rec Silicon to establish a manufacturing plant in Kimberley and create some real-world employment opportunities.

Gregory McCormick,

Kimberley
