Firefighters dedicate their lives to protecting others
Letter to the Editor
Today, on Firefighters’ National Memorial Day, we honour the firefighters who lost their lives while protecting their communities and keeping people safe and give sincere thanks to those who fought and continue to fight wildfires in B.C. and beyond.
Firefighters show extraordinary courage, compassion and dedication every time they answer the call. Whether they are responding to a wildfire, a structure fire or another emergency, they always put the safety of others first. We recognize the volunteer and professional firefighters throughout British Columbia who serve their neighbours with unwavering commitment.
Behind every firefighter is a network of families, friends and colleagues who understand the risks of this work and carry the weight of every loss. Today, we remember those who did not make it home and stand with everyone who continues to grieve their absence.
Honouring firefighters means supporting them throughout their careers and beyond. This year, we expanded presumptive cancer coverage to recognize additional occupational cancers and provide firefighters with greater access to the care and support they deserve. We have also invested in volunteer and composite fire departments throughout British Columbia, enabling communities to strengthen emergency-response capabilities with new equipment and training.
Firefighters dedicate their lives to protecting others, and we owe them our deepest gratitude. Today and every day, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice and thank all firefighters for their service.
