New outdoor court coming to Selkirk Secondary School

Selkirk Secondary School, School District No. 6 and Healthy Kimberley are excited to announce that they have completed fundraising for a new outdoor multisport court at the school.

The court will be primarily designed for basketball and pickleball but can also be used for activities like street hockey and other games. Although the court will be constructed on school grounds it will be open to use by the members of the community of all ages outside of school hours.

Principal Clint Dolgopol said, ā€œThis is a great project which will give our students more options for being active before and after school and during physical education class.ā€

According to Shenoa Runge, physical literacy coordinator for Healthy Kimberley, ā€œpromoting physical activity through unstructured ā€œpick-upā€ games is an important part of engaging youth, many of whom encounter barriers to participation in organized sport.ā€

Construction of the court is scheduled to begin in spring and the court will be ready for late summer.

It will be located on the lower part of the currently under-utilized green space adjacent to the auto-shop parking lot and will be completely fenced.

Plans have already been developed but the team still welcomes input on the final details from students, interest groups and local residents. For questions, please contact Ilona Hale at 250-427-4300 or [email protected]

The team would like to gratefully acknowledge all of the donors for their generous contributions: Columbia Basin Trust, Kimberley and District Community Foundation, Selkirk Secondary School Parent Advisory Committee, Selkirk Secondary School, Resorts of the Canadian Rockies and private donors.
