Notes from City Hall

Public Works Week

Please join the City of Kimberley for an open house at the Public Works Yard located at 250 Knighton Road on Thursday, May 25 from 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m. This is a kid-friendly event and everyone is welcome to attend. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served for lunch starting at 11 a.m.

National Public Works Week (May 21-27) is to help increase public awareness of the contributions made by Public Works professionals who maintain and improve the systems and services vital to a community’s health, safety, and comfort.

Mark Creek Dam Tours

If you have you ever wanted to get up close and personal with our watershed, here’s your chance! To celebrate Drinking Water Week and in conjunction with Public Works Day, two Mark Creek Dam (pictured above) guided walking tours will be held on Wednesday, May 25. The morning tour runs from 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. and the afternoon tour runs from noon – 3 p.m. You must be physically able to walk for the duration of the tour (one hour) and please wear suitable clothing and sturdy footwear. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to learn more about our water! This is a free event and we welcome community members to attend. If you’d like to join in, please contact Operations at 250-427-9660. There is a limited number of available seats, so call now to reserve your spot.

Mark Creek Water Level

Be advised that water levels can change rapidly, and are especially high during spring run-off. Flows are extremely fast when water levels are high and present an extreme danger to anyone, including pets, if they fall into the creek. The city has received two reports of pets being swept away in the fast running water. Please stay clear of the creek during periods of high flow.

Free Family Swim this evening

Come to the Aquatic Centre and enjoy a Free Family Swim on Wednesday, May 17 from 6 to 7 p.m. sponsored by the Kimberley Health Care Auxiliary. Remember persons 18 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult in the water.

Solid Waste and Regulations Bylaw No. 2520

Now that Spring Clean-up is over, the rules for solid waste pick up resume. Did you know that the city has a bylaw regarding solid waste collection? Here are a few keys points to remember:

  • Pick-up begins at 7:30 a.m. and garbage must not be set out before 5:00 a.m. on garbage collection day. Any garbage that is not out when the truck goes by will not be picked up. Please have it out and waiting at 7:30 a.m. Unattended garbage attracts bears and other wildlife.
    • Garbage must be set out in cans only.  Each household may put out a maximum of two garbage cans. For allowable garbage can specifications and more details on our garbage collection program, please see our website.
    • No recyclable materials, including yard waste will be collected.  Residents will need to take all yard and garden waste, paper, cardboard, glass containers, etc. are to the Kimberley Transfer Station at 800 Jim Ogilvie Way. City crews will not collect your garbage if there is recycling or yard waste mixed in with it.

Unattached Trailers

The Bylaw Enforcement Officer would like to remind residents that unattached trailers are not permitted to be parked on the streets. This is in contravention of the City of Kimberley Streets and Traffic Bylaw No. 1877, 1995. Please view the bylaw.
