Emergency Preparedness Week May 6 ā€“ 12

Is your family prepared to be on your own for 72 hours in case of an extended emergency? Emergency services may not be readily available, as increasing demands are placed on responders. It may take emergency workers some time to get to you as they help those in most critical need. Prepare for the worst, and hope for the best!

Be Prepared for Disaster

Commonly we believe that the primary hazards faced in Kimberley are fire and flood yet there are other hazards right here in our back yard.Ā Winter storms, hazardous material incidents, and landslides are just a few common examples of major emergencies that we are susceptible to.Ā  Regardless of the hazard, it is important that your household create a plan and prepare for major emergencies.Ā  Here are some tips to guide your way.

Have a Plan

Having a plan and preparing for a major emergency may seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Visiting the PreparedBC website can shed light on the process involved as well as providing helpful forms and checklists.Ā The critical guides and forms available include the ā€˜Household Preparedness Guideā€™ and the companion ā€˜Household Emergency Plan.ā€™Ā If you run a small business or tourism operation, check out theĀ ā€˜Guide for Small Businessesā€™ orĀ ā€˜Guide for Tourism Operators.ā€™

Emergency Kits

When disaster strikes, there won’t be time to collect emergency supplies so it is very important to build an emergency kit.Ā  Ensure you have emergency kits for your home, workplace and vehicle. A week or longer is better.Ā Basic survival items include: two litres of water per person per day, non-perishable foods, can opener, flashlight and batteries, candles matches or a lighter, battery powered or wind-up radio, first aid kit, prescription medications, infant formula if needed, extra keys, cash in small bills, and a list of contact information. A detailed list is available on the PreparedBC site.

Meet the Neighbours

And last but not least, remember that we’re in it together so meet your neighbours beforehand.Ā  The most immediate help following a disaster will come from those directly around you, usually your neighbours. Connecting with them today, and working together to prepare, will mean a better response and faster recovery. On the PreparedBC website you can download a copy of the ā€˜In it Together: Neighbourhood Preparedness Guideā€™ā€ and start the conversation now.

If you have any difficulty accessing these online resources please contact the Kimberley Fire Department at 250-427-4114, email us at [email protected] or drop in to see us during weekdays and we will gladly provide you with resources or assist you with your plan.
