Notes from City Hall

Council Meeting Schedule

Regular meetings of City of Kimberley council for the month of June will be held on Monday, June 10 and Monday, June 24 at 7 p.m. The Committee of the Whole Meeting will be held on Monday, June 17 at 7 p.m., as the June 3 meeting has been cancelled. All meetings are held in council chambers, upstairs at City Hall. Please check the city’s events calendar on the website for notices in case of cancellation, 24 hours prior to the scheduled meeting.

Property Tax Deadline

Property Tax Notices have been mailed to all property owners on record. The deadline for payment of your 2019 property taxes is July 2, at 4:45 p.m., after which time a 10% penalty will be added to any unpaid current year taxes. If you haven’t received your Tax Notice by the end of May, please contact City Hall at 250-427-5311 or [email protected] and request that a copy be forwarded to you.

Payment of your property taxes can be made by mail, in person at City Hall, by phone or Internet banking, or at most financial institutions. Cheques post-dated to July 2, will be accepted at City Hall in advance of the deadline. If paying by mail or electronic methods, please allow time for your payment to arrive by the deadline. Post marks on mailed remittances will not be considered as date of payment. Receipt of electronic payments will be recorded as of the date and time the funds are posted to the City’s bank account and not when the payment is transmitted by your financial institution.

Please remember to either complete the Home Owner Grant application that is attached to the bottom of the Tax Notice and remit it to City Hall, or complete the online application to claim the Grant.  A 10% penalty will be applied to any Home Owner Grant amounts not claimed by the deadline of July 2, at 4:45 p.m.

Invasive Weeds

The city will be undertaking an invasive weed management program in the coming weeks with a local certified contractor. Please give crews and equipment sufficient space to work, obeying all posted signage. If you spot an area of concern on city property that requires treatment, please contact the Operations Desk at 250-427-9660.

Arena Ice Allocation Meeting

All organizations/groups requesting to utilize the City of Kimberley Civic Centre and/or Marysville Arena’s ice for the 2019-2020 season are to attend the ice allocation meeting. This will be held on Wednesday, June 19 at 6 p.m. at the Kimberley Aquatic Centre. If you have any questions, please call the Operations Desk at 250-427-9660 or email [email protected].

Platzl Courtesy Reminder

The Bylaw Control Officer would like to remind residents, including children, that the Platzl is a pedestrian corridor. Bicycle and skateboard use is limited to the center fire lane, and using the central gazebo area for jumping and tricks is not permitted.

Unsightly Premises Bylaw

Under this bylaw, no owner or occupier of a property within the City of Kimberley shall permit or allow their property to become, or remain, untidy or unsightly. Every owner or occupier of property shall remove any accumulations of filth, discarded materials, rubbish, brush or other growth cuttings of any kind. The city may, by its employees or contractors, enter the property and affect the removal of the offending material at the expense of the person defaulting. Please see the ‘City of Kimberley Unsightly Premises Bylaw No. 1872, 1995’ at http://bit.ly/2ECHjO8.

Tax Relief for Businesses

The ‘Kimberley Investment Incentive Program’ provides opportunities for municipal tax exemption to encourage investment and upgrades to commercial and industrial properties. The program provides tax relief, for a specified term, from 100% of the increase in the municipal portion of property taxes resulting from the increased property value after a commercial, mixed residential-commercial, or industrial project is completed. Brownfield projects are also eligible for relief from 100% of the municipal portion of property taxes while a project involving environmental investigation or remediation activity is in progress. Visit our website or contact the Planning Department at 250.427.9665 or [email protected] for more details.
