RCMP continue scam and fraud awareness work

Kimberley RCMP took to social media this morning to remind people to be wary when dealing with any type of e-mail, text message or other electronic communication that requests you to pay money to the sender.

“There are a number of scams out there. Most common is the e-mail that will tell you that you owe money to a government agency or that a close relative is in trouble. It will then claim that you or your relative will be arrested, imprisoned or will suffer some other type of dire consequence, even death, unless you pay the e-mail sender money, usually in the form of cash, credit card, Bitcoin, or even online or in store gift cards,” Kimberley RCMP outlined, reminding people that these are scams.

“A sure clue usually comes from the e-mail itself. These e-mails will usually come from a web-based e-mail account and the English used will usually be good but not quite correct.”

Kimberley RCMP reminds all Internet users to be wary about sending money electronically. Also, if you have senior or other family members who are not overly Internet savvy, or are a little too trusting, please have a conversation with them and ask that you double check any e-mails they get requesting a monetary payout.
