RCMP kept busy with higher call volume

Although Kimberley RCMP noted a higher volume of calls over the long weekend there was no serious incidents.

Police attended the Wasa area several times as a result of previous issues but there was no bush parties which was the concern local residents had, reported Sgt. Chris Newel, Kimberley RCMP Detachment commander.

There was noise complaints in Kimberley and the outlying area, but police were able to warn the occupants and they were cooperative.

There was three motor vehicle collisions, all single vehicle with no serious injuries.

Police commonly receive erratic driving complaints and depending on the call volume and where officers are depends largely on whether we are able to apprehend and deal with them.

“In one case police were fortunate to be in the right place at the right time, which may have prevented a more serious incident,” Newel said.

A complaint was received on May 22 about 4:30 p.m. about a motorcycle traveling north on Highway 93/95 at a high rate of speed. An East Kootenay Traffic Services unit was not far away and clocked the motorcycle at 149 in a 100 zone.

And while dealing with the rider he detected an odor of alcohol. A breath demand was read and a “Fail” reading was obtained. The driver received a 90 day driving prohibited, the motorcycle was impounded for 30 days and a violation ticket issued for excessive speed.
