Transfer Station partially re-opening today
Five days after a fire tore through the building at the Kimberley Transfer Station, the site will partially re-open tomorrow on a limited basis.
“We are re-opening the recycling and reuse areas and will have a small area for the disposal of household garbage,” said Regional District of East Kootenay Environmental Services Manager Kevin Paterson. “The garbage disposal area has limited capacity, so we are asking residents to bring only small household loads. Any larger or commercial loads will have to be taken to the Cranbrook Transfer Station or Central Subregion Landfill until further notice.”
The Reuse Shed will be open and yard and garden waste will be accepted. Mattresses and box springs will NOT be accepted and will need to be taken to the Cranbrook Transfer Station where they can now be recycled.
“Essentially we need everyone to understand that our capacity is limited so they need to be conscious of what they bring to us,” added Paterson. “We are doing our best to minimize the impact to residents and are grateful for the public’s ongoing cooperation and understanding.”
The City of Kimberley’s regular garbage pick up will continue as normal and the schedule has not been impacted by the fire.
The structural engineer will be completing an assessment of the building this week. Efforts will continue to fully re-open the site; however, it is still too early to determine how long that process could take.
The Cranbrook Transfer Station is located at 2405 22nd Street North and is open between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. daily.
