Vikings, music, and a Medieval feast

By Robin Knight

The Kootenays are abuzz this summer with all things Medieval and all things Viking.

Whether listening to the radio, watching Shaw TV’s “Go!”, talking to a neighbour, or just walking down the street, one overhears the buzz about one of the most anticipated weekends of the summer – July 9 and 10. With a live Viking Village and live musicians in the Platzl, it is shaping up to be an exciting weekend.

This year something new has been added to the Kimberley City Bakery Medieval Festival’s weekend.

Med Feast posterThe Elks Club is putting on a ‘No Silverware’ Medieval Feast, the likes of which has never been seen in the East Kootenay. With Kimberley City Bakery creating plates out of bread and creating traditional medieval breads, whole roasted chickens, pork, and and roast vegetables, the dinner will be one not to be missed. But this will be no mere dinner!

What will make this event more memorable will be the live entertainment throughout the evening. If ever there was dinner and a show worth seeing in Kimberley, this will be it! With Lennan Delaney, a local musician, Cantus Firmus, an a cappella group out of Vancouver offering some live music, and the Viking groups attending en masse to offer everything from Viking slave auctions to story telling to skits, and more, it will definitely be an evening not to be missed!

The Sons of Fenrir have said that Kimberley City Bakery Medieval Festival is going to be their biggest event of the summer, and their enthusiasm for everything related to the event is contagious.

There are rumours that there will be fights beforehand to see who gets to attend the dinner, and once the Vikings get to the dinner, who knows what shenanigans they will get up to? You know you’ve always wanted a chance to eat with your hands, and buy a Viking Slave for a night. This is your chance!

Tickets are only $50, and are available at Kimberley’s Centex, Elks Club, and Kimberley City Bakery (Cash or cheque only).

If you are coming in from out of town, please contact Michelle Forbes, the event coordinator at: [email protected] about purchasing your tickets in advance. Be sure to purchase your tickets soon, before they sell out.

Tickets will not be available at the door, and must be purchased in advance.
