ʔaq̓am lifts evacuation alert

ʔaq̓am Chief and Council today lifted the evacuation alert for 36 homes in the community.

“The imminent risk of danger to life and property has been mitigated and with advisement from BC Wildfire staff, the ʔaq̓am Chief and Council are pleased to report the Evacuation Alert resulting from the ‘St Mary’s fire’ is now rescinded for the ʔaq̓am community,” a band press release outlined.

“Thank you to all emergency responders who assisted and continue to work on the fire. The team effort of the City of Cranbrook fire department, BC Wildfire Service crews, the RCMP and ʔaq̓am residents was incredibly impressive.”

“When we look to the experiences of some of our neighbours, what stands out as our critical success is not only our planning but the on-going relationship building with emergency personnel; knowing your neighbours is key,” added Nasuʔkin Joe Pierre.

The rescinded Evacuation Alert may be reactivated if conditions change. Area residents are cautioned that air quality may be poor.

The Regional District of East Kootenay notes that its Evacuation Alert for Mission/Fort Steele area REMAINS IN EFFECT and is being continually assessed.
