Secwepemc Nation seasonal gathering this weekend

The Shuswap Indian Band is honoured to host the Secwepemc Nation’s Fourth Seasonal Gathering from April 20 – 23 at the Shuswap Band Territorial Operations site located at 4878 Kinbasket Trail in Invermere.’

This gathering strives to bring together Secwepemc Nation citizens from all corners of our territory to participate in ceremony, share knowledge, and strengthen family relationships.

The focus of this gathering is Séwllkwe (water).  We Secwepemc have witnessed drastic changes to our water over the course of the last 150 years. From the streams, lakes and rivers that were once healthy have been forever altered due to damming, draining, pollution and climate change.

“As host community, we are honoured to host our relatives in the Eastern part of Secwepemcúlecw. We are joining together to uphold our inherent responsibility to take care of the water for our needs today and for our future generations’ needs. We are gathering to learn from each other on all aspects of being proud Secwepemc citizens. I am excited that our community has a chance to learn from their nation’s people, especially our Elders. I hold out my hands to the many who shouldered the responsibilities to make this event happen,” stated Chief Barb Cote.

The Secwepemc Gathering has been made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Shuswap Indian Band, Reconciliation Framework Agreement and Secwepemc Nation Building Initiative.

At this time, we respectfully ask that this is private gathering be exclusive to members of our Nation and their families.

Community Support Worker/Communications Coordinator
