Please don’t pump water directly to sewer system

An over capacity of water in the City of Cranbrook’s sewer system is believed to be causing some basements to back up around the Cranbrook.

That is a result of an investigation by Public Works crews overnight Saturday and into early Sunday morning.

The area most affected is from 15th Avenue South to 18th Avenue South, between 4th Street South and 6th Street South around the St. Mary’s School area and may possibly impact other areas south of that.

If you live in this area and have important items stored in the basement, please move those items to a higher floor as soon as possible.

If you are dealing with flooding issues and are actively pumping water out, please allow it to simply flow outside and not directly into the city’s sewer system. Public Works believes this is part of the issue.

Residents in this area and immediately south of that vicinity can begin to flush their toilets, shower, bathe or use their dishwashers or washing machines but to please only use what is needed.

The city wants to minimize the amount of additional water using the sewer system until this issue can be corrected.

Further updates will be provided throughout the day as more information becomes available. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
