Official opening of the Kimberley Riverside Putting Course

It is a state of the art putting course, complete with sand bunkers, fringe grass landscaping beds, ponds, streams, waterfalls, and natural rock tiers.

The City of Kimberley is excited to announce the completion of the Riverside Putting Course at the Kimberley Riverside Campground, with the official opening taking place this Saturday, September 15 at 11 a.m.

The objective of the course was to create a unique recreational amenity that compliments the natural beauty of the area, allowing the best of golfers to hone their skills while still being accessible and enjoyable to all ages and skill levels. The state of the art putting course is designed to look like a miniature 18-hole golf course — complete with sand bunkers, fringe grass, landscaping beds, ponds, streams, waterfalls, and natural rock tiers.

According to Mayor Ron McRae, “The course is one more reason for campers and visitors to the area to stay another day, as well as a great new amenity for all the public to enjoy.”

“We worked hard to find a team to get exactly what we wanted,” says, campground manager Jarret Bell “We wanted it to look and feel like a real golf course.”

The course is compact, with an elevation drop of about 14 feet east to west. The greens, gently sloping down the hill, are surrounded by trees with a mountain view at the west end. There are tiers and layers, uphills, downhills and doglegs. And even with the elevation change, it’s fully wheelchair accessible. Bell says a round should take approximately an hour and the cost per round is only $10 for an adult or $29 for a family of four.  There are affordable rates for children, youth and seniors as well.

The project is made possible through funding provided by the provincial Resort Municipality Infrastructure Program and the Kimberley Community Development Society capital reserve.

Our government believes in the economic power of our resort communities to create jobs for British Columbians,” says Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training Minister Pat Bell. “It’s the reason we support Kimberley with the Resort Municipality Initiative and the reason tourism is identified as a key growth sector in the BC Jobs Plan.”

In 2006, the RMI was developed to assist resort-orientated municipalities maintain and grow robust local and regional tourism economies. The initiative helps small resort municipalities overcome unique challenges and take advantage of opportunities with a goal of increasing tourist visitation, visitor activities, employment, private investment, municipal tax revenue, and the diversification of the municipal tax base.

The Kimberley Community Development Society fosters community, historical, cultural, and recreational attractions in the City of Kimberley.

The Riverside Putting Course is located at the Kimberley Riverside Campground, within city limits along the scenic St. Mary Lake Road. The official opening takes place Saturday Sept. 15, at 11 a.m.
