Reinhart Player of the Week

Sam Reinhart’s return to the Kootenay ICE has been akin to a tank of gas getting a 40% nitro injection.

Since returning to Cranbrook from a season opening stint with the National Hockey League’s Buffalo Sabres, Reinhart’s ICE have gone from being cellar dwellers in the Western Hockey League (WHL) to one of the league’s hottest teams, albeit one four points shy of playoff contention country.

The club is on a five-game win streak, with the last four victories all coming since Reinhart returned to action, along with fellow ICE sniper Tim Bozon.

The WHL announced today (Nov. 17) that Reinhart is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week for the week ending November 16.

Reinhart netted seven points, including a goal and six assists, while posting a +4 rating in two games over the past week, leading the ICE to a pair of wins in that span.

On Friday, November 14, Reinhart recorded four assists, including setting up the tying and game-winning goals, in a 7-6 overtime victory over the visiting Calgary Hitmen.

On Saturday, November 15, Reinhart scored and set up two more for a three-point outing while being named the game’s first star in a 4-2 road win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

Reinhart, a 19-year-old from Vancouver, is in his fourth season in the WHL with the ICE.  The 6’1”, 190-lb center has three goals and a smoking hot 10 points through four games since returning to the ICE from the Buffalo Sabres.

The 2013-14 WHL Player of the Year and Sportsman of the Year, Reinhart has amassed 104 goals and 264 points in 207 career regular season contests.  He was selected by the Sabres with the second overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft.

Bozon’s return to the lineup has provided much-needed secondary punch to the suddenly offensively scary ICE. Bozon has scored three goals and added three helpers in his first six games back after being returned to the WHL by the Montreal Canadiens.

The WHL has also named Rylan Toth of the Red Deer Rebels for the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week award. An 18-year-old from Saskatoon, Sask., Toth appeared in two games over the past week, posting a 2-0-0-0 record while allowing just three goals on 50 shots for a 1.50 goals-against average and a .940 save percentage in that span.

The ICE’s next game is home at Western Financial Place versus the Medicine Hat Tigers on Wednesday, Nov. 19. Game time is 7 p.m.
