October in the East Kootenay
October is perhaps the most beautiful of the 12 months in the East Kootenay.
Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and to each his/her own.
Still, as an autumn-born soul, I am always stirred and inspired by September’s perfect temperatures and slower pace, and then amazed by the daily-different colours as plant life all around us transitions to winter’s embrace.
October surprises are common in our mountainous region, especially in the higher zones, with early glimpses of colder times ahead. Some folks shiver and harrumph at the thought of winter while shred and sled heads become children on Christmas Eve.
This past month, due to a brief visit home to the prairies at its start, and the general ebb and flow of life, I didn’t get out and about as much as I normally do.
One glorious afternoon photo shoot saved my bacon when it came to compiling adequate images for this monthly feature. That particular tour began in Kimberley and meandered to St. Mary Lake and back to Cranbrook via River Road and Perry Creek Road.
The afternoon was a crackling explosion of deep, crisp autumn light – with blues and golds and yellows bursting and captivating all the more thanks to the previous week being grey, dull and dreary.
This month’s feature also contains some images by Kevin and Steven Schafer, who shared photos from a hunting adventure north of Kimberley. The cabin pit bull and the lead image of the 4×4 are particularly cool. Thanks for the shots lads.
Other areas featured include: Cranbrook, Hosmer/Fernie, Invermere and Sparwood.
