Fast moving grass fire knocked down
At 5:07 p.m. on May 18, the Kimberley Fire Department was dispatched to a grass fire located between the Volksmarch trail and the Rails to Trail along Jim Ogilvie Way.
The fire department arrived to find heavy smoke and ground fire moving quickly due to wind conditions. A dozen firefighters with four fire apparatus worked to extinguish the fire after it burned approximately to 900 square metres.
“The surprisingly fast rate of spread for this fire is definite indication of how dry conditions are. Without prolonged precipitation these conditions will remain hazardous. As we go into summer it is very important that we all demonstrate extreme caution with cigarettes and other potential ignition sources. Every fire starts small, and with conditions the way they are, a small fire could easily get out of hand in short order,” stated Rick Prasad Assistant Fire Chief and Fire Prevention Officer.
“At this point a fire cause has not been determined but we have ruled out natural causes,” he said.
The Kimberley Fire Department is looking for information from the public to help determine the origin. Please call (250)-427-4114 with any information you may have.
