Another severe thunderstorm watch issued

For the second straight day Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the East Kootenay.

The alert was issued at 5 a.m. for the East Kootenay, including the Columbia Valley, Elk Valley and Kimberley/Cranbrook areas.

“Thunderstorms will develop across the Kootenay and Columbia regions beginning near midday and there is the potential for some of these storms to become severe. Heavy downpours and strong wind gusts are the main concerns however hail is also possible,” Environment Canada reported.

Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to [email protected] or tweet reports to #BCStorm.
