Head-on near Skookumchuck kills elderly man
A head-on crash on Highway 93/95 last night claimed the life of an 83-year-old American man.
East Kootenay Traffic Services (EKTS) RCMP and BC Ambulance were called to a crash between Ford Mustang and a rental van at 7:05 p.m. August 3, about 10 km north of Skookumchuck.
EKTS Sgt. Don Erichsen reported that the southbound rental van, carrying four occupants, attempted to pass a tow truck and resulted in crashing head on with the northbound Mustang, killing the elderly driver. The deceased driver’s wife was not injured. The tow truck was also involved in the crash.
The four males in the van were taken to East Kootenay Regional Hospital with minor injuries.
The crash closed Highway 93/95 for about 7.5 hours, re-opening again at 1:30 a.m. August 4. The incident is under investigation.
Sgt. Erichsen would like to remind the public that the highways are currently experiencing peak vehicle volumes. “Everyone is reminded to remain vigilant, patient and obey all traffic signs while driving,” he said.
