Traffic stop leads to officers being assaulted

Cranbroook RCMP are requesting a Cranbrook couple be charged with assaulting two police officers after a traffic stop in the early morning hours of December 4.

As a part of National Impaired Driving Week, Cranbrook RCMP was conducting a roadblock Sunday in the 1700 Block of 2nd Street N at about 2:15 a.m. A black Hyundai pulled up to the roadblock and when the driver’s window was down the police officer smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Both occupants were placed under arrest for Possession of a controlled substance.

The male passenger took exception to being arrested and was belligerent to the police officer. When attempting to handcuff him, the male refused to listen to directions and then braced himself against the police car in an attempt to keep officers from handcuffing him. The male then spat on a police officer. The male was subsequently arrested.

After grabbing a police officer, the female driver is also facing charges.

Both occupants of the vehicle are facing charges of assaulting a police officer and obstruction and will appear in court on February 14.
