The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is reporting four new lightning-caused wildfires since yesterday, with the largest one (.6 hectare) in the White Creek drainage between St. Mary’s Alpine Provincial Park and the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy, about 26 km northwest of Kimberley.

There are two new lightning-caused fires burning south and southeast of Elkford in the Weigert Creek area. A .18 ha fire is burning in the upper reaches, while another smaller fire (.01 ha) is reported 11 km south of Elkford.

There is a new lightning-caused fire in the Olivia Creek area, 11 km north of Fernie. The fire is noted as being .01 ha in size.

There are 15 wildfires burning in the East Kootenay, according to BCWS, with the status quo remaining on the larger fires, which are still being actioned by the BCWS. The Island Pond fire 12 km south of Canal Flats remains 75 contained.
