Man carrying gun caused highway closure
A flurry of commotion involving the RCMP near the East Kootenay Branch of the BC SPCA yesterday afternoon (June 5) was due to two calls in a short time concluding in the same area.
Cranbrook RCMP Detachment commander S/Sgt. Hector Lee said multiple police cruisers were dispatched to the BC SPCA area after a call was received of a lone male dressed in camouflage and carrying a rifle walking down the highway.
“We responded like we would with any firearm call and blocked the highway for the safety of motorists heading into the area in question,” S/Sgt. Lee said.
“Responding officers determined quickly that the male had broken down and was coming back from hunting. Not wanting to leave the firearm insecure in his vehicle, he took it and met a friend who came to pick him up on the highway. The highway was re-opened,” he explained.
“The second incident that came in right after was a result of a domestic complaint and our officers located the vehicle shortly after the first event on the highway and conducted their investigation of that matter,” Lee related.
