City seeks grant to improve Joseph Creek
City of Cranbrook council July 30 passed a resolution supporting a grant application for the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) for the purposes of Joseph Creek channel improvements.
Council agreed to have Public Works staff submit an application for funding for Joseph Creek Channel Improvements through the ICIP – Green Infrastructure: Environmental Quality Sub-stream and support the project by committing $500,000 to the project.
“There are many locations along Joseph Creek that require channel restoration, vegetation removal and erosion protection. This project will be part of a larger plan to improve the function, reduce the flooding risk and improve ecological and recreational values along Joseph Creek throughout the City of Cranbrook,” reported Mike Matejka, city Manager of Infrastructure Planning & Delivery Division.
The city’s hare of the project ($500,000) could come from the city’s 2019 Storm Sewer Budget (of $550,000 total budget), Matejka told council.
The project is eligible for up to 73.33% funding, for a potential total project value of $1,375,281.
Mayor Lee Pratt enquired if the project would take care of the overgrowth of willow trees along many sections of Joseph Creek.
“Those willows have been identified as a risk” to the city in the event of a high water incident, Matejka said, adding they would be part of the work.
