Wind chill near minus 40 forecast
Environment Canada has re-issued the following Warning Alert for extreme cold in the Elk Valley, as well as Kootenay and Yoho National Park areas.
“A period of very cold wind chills is expected. A cold Arctic air mass has settled over the southern Interior. The cold temperatures and winds will combine to produce wind chill values near minus 40 degrees Celsius tonight.”
Temperatures in the Cranbrook/Kimberley and Columbia Valley areas are also expected to reach -30 C this evening.
“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter,” Environment Canada warns.
“Motorists are reminded to watch for cold and windy conditions which may bring blowing snow, as well as falling branches and other debris, and slippery sections on the roadways. Prepare for extreme winter conditions and only travel if necessary,” Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting Ltd. reported to stakeholders this evening.
