Extreme Cold Warning for Elk Valley and KNP again

Environment Canada has issued an Extreme Cold Warning for the Elk Valley and Kootenay National Park areas again (Feb. 8).

Extreme wind chill values are anticipated tonight, with overnight lows of -22C to -28C combined with brisk winds of 20 to 30 km/h, which will generate wind chill values between -35 and -40 tonight and into Saturday morning.

“Wind chill values will moderate Saturday afternoon as temperatures rise,” Environment Canada stated. “Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

“Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.”

While only the Elk Valley and KNP are covered in the warning, temperatures in the rest of the East Kootenay will remain frigid as well.

The other areas of the region will experience periods of light snow overnight with northeast winds gusting between 20 and 40 km/h. A low of -20 is expected in the evening and -33 overnight, bringing a risk of frostbite.

On Saturday (Feb. 9), there is a 40% chance of flurries, gusting winds up to 30 km/h and temperatures ranging between -21 and -23 C.

“Motorists are reminded to watch for cold and windy conditions which may bring blowing snow, as well as falling branches and other debris, and slippery sections on the roadways. Prepare for extreme winter conditions and only travel if necessary,” Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting Ltd. stated this afternoon.
