August in the East Kootenay
August happened? Where did it go?
You mean to say that it’s already mid September? What the hell?
Why is it the ‘dog days of summer’ go by so cannonatingly fast?
And why am I channeling Danny Gallivan while writing off the annual September trek to Invermere to take part in the Rite of Fall – the hockey pool? Greedy bastages! (I am shaking my fist at the heavens for some reason)
We normally publish our monthly feature depicting life as it is happening and how our region looked, warts and all (and bums), at the start of each month, but a dog day time vacuum whipped me upside the head and I completely missed the last step.
August was a lovely month in the East Kootenay; plenty of sunshine, some scorching hot days, warm, pleasant nights and nary a disaster to be seen. Aside from a few fires, along with a few hazy days, the region has thankfully escaped fire season nicely intact. The same can’t be said for our provincial brethren a couple of mountain ranges over in the Okanagan. Best wishes to you good folks.
We also had some pretty wild thunderstorms in August – savage downpours. The power and wonder of summer!
Fittingly, August checked out with a blue moon – and things got weird and wacky. Perhaps that’s what caused the time vacuum? Hmm…
Our monthly ramble around the region was somewhat interrupted in August as we dared to dream and took a couple of weekends off (per se). That allowed us to explore some beautiful nearby country in Idaho, Washington and Montana, which is my way of filing an excuse as to why our monthly collection is thinner than usual.
Areas covered in this month’s photo feature are: Canal Flats, Cranbrook, Elko, Fairmont Hot Springs, Fernie, Flathead Valley, Fort Steele, Grasmere, Kimberley, Kootenay National Park, Sweetwater, Wardner and just because I like it, one image is of Lake Koocanusa from the westside road in Montana.
