Small fire reported near Skookumchuk mill
BC Wildfire Service this morning reports a new, small wildfire burning overnight at Skookumchuck.
The estimated .01 hectare fire is located between the CPR tracks and Farstad Way, a few hundred metres from the pulp mill. The suspected cause is unknown at this time.
Two other fires in the Lake Koocanusa area are now considered under control.
The person-caused fire at Koocanusa Village, on the west side of Lake Koocanusa, is under control at .01 ha.
And the Dorr area fire, kitty corner across the lake from Koocanusa Village, is also under control at .7 ha.
The Kiakho Lake fire west of Cranbrook is under control at .6 ha and the Stirton Road fire near Marysville is under control at four ha.
While the East Kootenay is staying relatively free of wildfires thus far, the Central Kootenay is starting to feel the heat, with 17 new fires in the past 24 hours.
Provincially, there have been 101 new fires in the past week and in the Southeast Fire Centre there have been 26 new fires in the past two days.
