Opposed to change in service

Letter to the Editor

Dear RDEK: With reference to the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Fibre Optic Network which currently serves Wink Wireless and its many customers, we have been approached by Columbia Basin Broadband Communications (CBBC) to change our service access from Shaw to them. I VEHEMENTLY oppose this move on the following grounds:

RDEK Fibre optic Network was originally built to serve communities along its path and the capital cost of placing the fibre optic network is being paid for by local residents as a tax assessment.

NanoFibre leased this network from RDEK and charged a fee for service access. Wink Wireless was connected to this Fibre Optic Network at great expense!

Shaw recently assumed the lease of the RDEK Fibre optic Network from NanoFibre and proposes to increase the existing fee by approximately 15%.

CBBC now proposes, on approval, to provide service on the RDEK Fibre Optic Network to WISP’s and offers a rate, almost double of what Shaw proposes!
What happened to the original concept of providing Internet access to communities within the RDEK Fibre Optic Network at affordable rates?
