Vibrancy added to Fernie’s downtown

By Mary Giuliani, Special to e-KNOW

Fernie has been busy this year with events including the Sunday Socials held downtown that turned the usual quiet Sundays into vibrant filled occasions.

Bike races are becoming more and more popular and this year the Trans Rockies and the Furious Three saw huge numbers of brightly clad cyclists grace the streets of Fernie.

The Wam Bam Jam tournament also drew large crowds that came to see competitors jumping high in the air while doing twists and turns. Pretty impressive.

Fernie is a Mecca for outdoor enthusiasts that come for the fly fishing, boating, hiking as well as cycling.

There are many trails available for people of all ages and fitness levels. For instance the dyke trail along the river is both scenic and easy to walk for those of us that don’t want to ride the more difficult trails.

The Miners Walk project in front of City Hall is well on its way to completion with a celebration of unveiling being planned for the Thanksgiving weekend of this coming October.

Donations are still coming in and the sale of bricks with names on them now has closed. This personal way of honouring members and businesses of the community has proven very successful with numerous orders placed from outside of Fernie, some by past residents others by family members of those that lived here years ago and are now deceased.

The unexpected hot days have proven great for gardens and people in Fernie have been showing off their beautiful plants. Downtown Fernie has hanging planters with blooms that are spectacular thanks to contractor Pam McSkimming and her crew.
