As another atmospheric river washes over western B.C. and pushes inland, it is expected that the high country will be hit with heavy snowfall.

And if you have to drive west on Highway 3 or Highway 1, be prepared as Environment Canada has issued winter storm warnings for both Kootenay and Rogers passes, as well as Paulson Summit.

Hazardous winter conditions with snowfall accumulations of 30 to 40 cm are expected on Highway 3 – Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass between today and Friday afternoon (Nov. 26).

“A strong weather system will bring a long duration winter storm to parts of the Kootenays. Heavy snow will bring hazardous winter conditions along Highway 3 from Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass. The heavy snow will ease Friday afternoon,” Environment Canada said.

“The total snowfall accumulation for this event is expected to reach up to 35 cm along some sections of Highway 3 by Friday afternoon.

Hazardous winter conditions are expected with snowfall between 30 and 40 cm on the Trans-Canada Highway from Eagle Pass to Rogers Pass.

“A strong weather system will bring a long duration winter storm to parts of the Columbias,” Environment Canada reported

“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.”

Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions.

DriveBC is currently warning motorists about slippery sections on Highway 3 between Salmo and Creston, with some compact snow.
