An all-party Special Committee to Review the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) is seeking input from British Columbians as part of its review of the act.

FIPPA sets out the privacy rights of individuals as they relate to public-sector organizations and establishes an individual’s right to access records from a public body, including access to one’s own personal information or to request that their information be corrected.

The committee, which includes Kootenay East MLA Tom Shypitka, will hold a public consultation, including a number of public meetings, in the coming months to gather input on how the act is working and might be improved.

Those interested in presenting to the committee are invited to register their interest by 3 p.m. (Pacific time) on Feb. 7, via the committee’s website or by contacting the Parliamentary Committees Office at 250-356-2933 or 1-877-428-8337 (toll-free in B.C.).

Details about additional opportunities to share input will be available in February.

The committee must submit its report, including any recommendations, to the legislative assembly by June 15.
