Freak incident results in fatality at Canal Flats
A freak incident resulted in the death of a Calgary mother of two on Friday, Oct. 5 at Canal Flats.
The East Kootenay Integrated Road Safety Unit and Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a fatal collision October 5, at 11:10 a.m. on Highway 93/95 on the Kootenay River Bridge.
Investigators reported that a southbound commercial vehicle, towing an unloaded low-bed trailer, was southbound on the bridge deck when it passed a northbound Subaru Legacy.
A large rock, approximately 12 inches by 5 inches in diameter, was thrown from the commercial vehicles dual wheels and struck the Subaru.
The rock entered the passenger compartment through the front windshield striking the female passenger in the head and she succumbed to her injuries.=
The 37-year-old female passenger is from Calgary, Alberta and was on vacation with her husband and two small children.
The suspect vehicle was stopped some time later and seized. The investigation shows that the rock appears to have been lodged between the dual tires on the trailer.
The driver of the commercial vehicle, who did not know about the incident until contacted by police, has been released at this time with no charges pending further investigation.
