Obituary of Thelma Catherine (Dot) Morris

Thelma “Dot” MORRIS

March 18, 1930 ~ October 2, 2022 (age 92)

Thelma Catherine (Dot) Morris, nee Jerome, passed away on October 2, 2022 at the Elk Valley Hospital in Fernie, BC at the age of 92.  She was born on March 18, 1930 in Trail, BC.

She was predeceased by her husband, Jack Morris, brothers Carl and Bob, two nephews, Ric Jerome and Trevor Morris, her niece Kim Murphy, brothers-in-law Bill Carter and Doug Morris, and her sister-in-law, Faye Morris.

Dot is survived by her five children: Don (Wendy) of Gibsons, BC, Dale (Tara) of Nelson, BC, Laurel-Ann (Elov Simmons) of Elkford, BC, Greg (Diana) of Abbotsford, BC and Donna May of Victoria, BC; eight grandchildren: Shem (Robyn) Simmons, Shurrí (Kyle Jensen), Cheylen Simmons, Lydon (Serena) Simmons, Kyle Morris, Eirik Morris, Michael Morris, and Jackie Morris, seven great grandchildren; her two sisters, Eve Carter of Provo, Utah, and Fran (Chuck) Colpitts of Edmonton, AB, her sister-in-law Ev Jerome of Cranbrook, and six nieces and six nephews and their families.

Dot, known as Dolly in her youth, grew up in Blewett, Crescent Valley and Nelson.  In 1953 she married Jack Morris in Neslon and the couple made their home in Kaslo where they were both very active in community life.

Dot was a talented lady, and often used those talents to benefit others.  She loved to sew, knit, and do crossword puzzles, and in later years she enjoyed her garden.  In the early years of their marriage, Dot and Jack loved to dance! They taught square dancing and eventually started teen square dancing in their basement.

Dot was an excellent bookkeeper and was the treasure for many of the organizations around town, including the Kootenay Lake Historical Society of which they were founding members; staff there were often treated to her chocolate chip cookies!

Dot and Jack had a clothing store in Kaslo until the late 60’s when they moved to Mirror Lake and built the Mirror Lake Campground.  She also worked as the receptionist at the Victorian Hospital of Kaslo for many years.

Because of their involvement in the community, many meetings and parties were held in their home where Dot was an excellent hostess.  In later years, she loved being a part of the “Singing Grannies”.  In 2003 she was awarded the Kaslo Citizen of the Year.

In 2005 after the death of her husband, Dot moved to live with her daughter in Elkford until 2003 when she moved into the Rocky Mountain Village in Fernie.

Dot had a 25 year battle with memory and ability robbing seizures.  When she could no longer serve others, she blessed the lives of those who served her; often rewarding them with her famous smile and a sweet, “I love you.”

The family would like to thank everyone for their love and support, especially the staff at Rocky Mountain Village, and the staff at the Elk Valley Hospital.

A memorial will be held for Dot in Kaslo at the Legion Hall on Friday, October 14th at 11:00 AM. Following the service, Dot will be laid to rest with her husband in the Kaslo Cemetery.
