Alberta man killed in head-on with transport near Sparwood

On November 21 at 6:25 p.m., Elk Valley RCMP received a report of a serious head-on collision between a transport truck and Honda Civic on Highway 3 near Corbin Road, approximately 12 km east of Sparwood.

Upon arrival, officers immediately observed the transport truck was fully engulfed in flames.  The semi was facing eastbound in the westbound ditch with the two trailers situated across the westbound lane.

Sparwood Fire Department was in attendance to extinguished the fire on the transport truck.

The lone driver of the transport truck remained on scene and was co-operative with the police. The driver was then transported to the Elk Valley Hospital by Fernie Emergency Health Services (EHS) for medical attention and was deemed uninjured at the time of the collision.

EHS had pronounced the lone male driver of the Honda Civic as deceased at the scene.

There was severe damage to the Honda Civic in the westbound lane perpendicular to the roadway.

Road conditions were unfavourable at the time, and it is not believed that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision.  The deceased was identified as a 52-year-old male from Alberta.

Highway 3 remained closed for a period of time, but has since re-opened.  The involved vehicles remained on scene for safe removal during daylight hours.  There were no other personal injuries or property damage, reported Cst. Debra Katerenchuk of Elk Valley RCMP.

Elk Valley RCMP would like to thank Sparwood Fire Department and Fernie Emergency Health Services for their quick responses to the scene.

The Elk Valley RCMP actively continues with their investigation.
