Hugs to an amazing community
Letter to the Editor
Hugs to an amazing community! Last October while delivering meals for the Salvation Army I was asked for help by an individual I deliver to. He is a victim of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and has some mental health issues, depression, as well as having endured physical and sexual abuse as a child among many other traumas in his life.
He is living on $1,600/month disabilities pension. His eight-year-old dentures were broken and unusable and his six-year-old glasses had lost a lens and also unusable.
I decided to advocate for him and through the generosity of the Cranbrook Eagles and the Alliance Church we were able to raise the funds for both. His fridge hadn’t worked for a long time so I found a used one on Buy and Sell.
When I explained his situation the nice young couple gave me back my money! He rents an incredibly small apartment with one room that is his bedroom, kitchen and living room all in one. His place is small, dingy and dark. He mentioned to me the other day that he felt that if he could repaint his apartment a brighter colour it would cheer him up and help with his depression.
I was in Cloverdale Paint today and mentioned his situation. I made enquires as to what the cost would be but had to decline due to his financial situation. They immediately donated a cleanser to prep the walls and asked for my phone number. A few hours later I received a call saying they wanted to help.
They donated base coat, paint, brushes, trays and everything else needed. I was overwhelmed by their generosity! I am so proud and blessed to be living in such a generous community where every day I see so many volunteers, businesses and organizations willing to donate their time, money, and resources to help those less fortunate. My heartfelt thanks to you all. Well done Cranbrook!
Thank you.
