St. Mary wildfire and evacuation alerts expand

Fort Steele Heritage Town now on evacuation alert

The BC Wildfire Service this afternoon (July 18) reports the out-of-control St. Mary River Wildfire in ʔaq’am community is now an estimated 800 hectares in size.

There are a number of resources on the fire today, including three initial attack crews and two unit crews, as well as aviation resources, including a skimmer group.

Heavy equipment worked through the night to support containment efforts. In addition, Structure Protection Units are mobilized and planning is underway.

The Evacuation ORDER for a number of homes in the community of ʔaq’am remains in effect.

The Evacuation Alert for 10 dwellings on reserve, 33 dwellings in the surrounding area and Fort Steele Heritage Town also remains in effect.

The Regional Emergency Operations Centre remains open in support of ʔaq’am and those residents who are on Evacuation Order and Alert.
