Visiting child rescued from Matheson Falls
On July 23 at 6:37 p.m., BC Ambulance requested the assistance of Elk Valley Regional RCMP to attend a scene at Matheson Falls near Fernie.
Fernie Search and Rescue (SAR) was also headed to that location to rescue an eight-year-old girl who had slipped off the falls and suffered serious injuries.
Upon arrival, Fernie SAR was able to long line rescue the girl from her location at the bottom of the falls and she was quickly brought to the staging area where BC Ambulance and STARS Air Ambulance from Calgary were waiting.
The girl was last known to be suffering some light head trauma and a significant injury to her left leg. She was taken to Children’s Hospital in Calgary, where she lives with her family.
“Elk Valley RCMP would like to thank a local dirt bike rider who, when flagged down by the family, took risks of his own to locate the girl with her father and provided support until the SAR team arrived on scene,” said S/Sgt. Svend Nielsen, Elk Valley RCMP Detachment commander
“As always, police are appreciative to have Fernie SAR and other SAR groups in the area to assist emergency services when needed. Our investigation is concluded.”
