Windy storm and smoke alerts cover entire region

Environment Canada has this morning issued two weather alerts covering the entire East Kootenay and Ktunaxa Nation.
Along with a smoky skies bulletin, there is a warning about widespread gusty winds and the risk of thunderstorms from today into Friday.
“Strong, gusty winds shifting from southwest to northwest. Risk of dry lightning. Continued heat (southern Interior). Worsening wildfire conditions, possible new fire starts, risk of breaking tree branches, challenging boating conditions,” Environment Canada outlined in its alert.
“Widespread southwesterly winds of 30 km/h gusting to 50 will develop this morning and switch to northwesterly 20 km/h gusting 50 near midday (Central Interior) or overnight and into Friday (southern Interior) as a dry cold front passes.
“Instability along the cold front may lead to the development of thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. The main hazard is localized severe winds with speeds up to or above 70 km/h and dry lightning (lightning that comes with little or no rain),” Environment Canada said.
Drought-stricken trees will also be more susceptible to winds.

The Smoky Skies Bulletin notes the region will be impacted or are likely be impacted by wildfire smoke over the next 24-48 hours.
