Severe thunderstorm watch for Golden and KNP areas

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Golden and Kootenay National Park (KNP) areas for Friday, August 18.

“Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts and heavy rain. Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road,” Environment Canada stated.

While the watch does not include the rest of the East Kootenay, the region is again under weather alerts for gusting winds and risk of thunderstorms as well as a smoky skies bulletin.

Lightning has been detected west of Radium Hot Springs, too.

“Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! “Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall,” Environment Canada explained.
