Tree faller killed near Elko

On October 11 at 5:07 p.m., Elk Valley RCMP along with the Elko Fire Department, the BC Ambulance Service and Fernie Search and Rescue attended to a location east of Waldo Road and south of Baynes Lake near Elko.

There had been a report of two friends cutting firewood for the winter and a tragic accident had occurred.

After some time, due to poor reception and incomplete data regarding their GPS location, the persons involved were found by police and BC Ambulance.

“The friends had been cutting down two trees separately, one tree hit the other on the way down and the one tree fell on the deceased, causing severe injury,” reported S/Sgt. Svend Nielsen, Elk Valley RCMP Detachment commander.

Fernie Search and Rescue attended the location to assist BC Ambulance with removal of the remains due to the remote location, while police supported the friend and his family to ensure their well-being. RCMP continue to support the BC Coroner’s Service investigation.

Elk Valley RCMP and Fernie Search and Rescue offer condolences to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.

The investigation is ongoing.
