SD6 hiring non-certified teachers for on-call duty
Pressures on the workforce are affecting the K-12 education sector within British Columbia as well as throughout Canada and internationally. Despite creative recruiting efforts, the Rocky Mountain School District No. 6 (SD6) has experienced a shortage of available teachers teaching on-call (TTOC) in the Windermere area.
The school district has put in place various contingency plans to ensure continuity of learning for students with the collaboration of teachers, principals, and district leadership.
The school district has experienced difficulty recruiting and hiring certified TTOCs to fill intermittent or ongoing vacancies leading the district to make the difficult decision to begin advertising for non-certified TTOCs.
Non-certified TTOCs will be required to hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree or a trades certificate.
They will also follow the school district’s usual hiring practices which includes obtaining a criminal record check and obtaining a letter of permission from the Teacher Regulation Branch.
While the school district will be seeking to hire persons without teaching certificates, those successful applicants will only be in front of students if no TTOC possessing the necessary qualifications and certification for the assignment was available.
The school district will begin advertising for non-certified teachers teaching on April 30, 2024.
