Cold warning for national parks extended

The extreme cold warning issued by Environment Canada for Kootenay and Yoho national parks has been extended to Friday morning (Feb. 14).

A prolonged period of cold wind chills continues from now through Friday morning.

“An Arctic air mass combined with moderate winds, will result in wind chill values near -35 degrees Celsius during the overnight and morning hours now through Friday,” Environment Canada stated this morning.

“Temperatures will gradually rise and winds will ease Friday afternoon.” Extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter. Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill.

While the cold alert is only for the two nearby national parks, overnight temperatures elsewhere in the region will dip to as low as -25C.
